AMY TYLER
Oncology & Lymphoedema Massage Therapist - Australia
This KickPink program is a well delivered online course & covers information from the time of diagnosis, treatment options, exercise and so much more. I can say my kete (woven baskets) have been fulled by taking this course. I am excited to have new and revised tools to be able to use to enhance my patients tinana, hinengaro and wairua (body, mind and spirit).
1. Perform an initial evaluation at the time of cancer diagnosis, formulate a plan of care based on the prospective surveillance model, and adjust treatment accordingly throughout medical management and beyond.
2. Provide early intervention to improve post-operative surgical outcomes and prescribe progressive therapeutic exercises based upon primary surgical interventions and reconstruction techniques.
3. Perform manual therapy techniques to improve scar tissue and fascial mobility post-operatively.
4. Assess and treat common post-op shoulder complications including shoulder impingement, capsular contracture, and lymphatic cording.
5. Incorporate brain-pain neuroscience into education & treatment for post-mastectomy pain syndrome.
6. Identify patients at higher-risk of lymphedema, provide preventative education, and deliver evidence-based solutions to reduce the risk of lymphedema onset.
7. Perform an initial lymphedema assessment, provide therapeutic interventions for stages 0-1, and identify appropriate referrals to certified lymphedema therapists for complete decongestive therapy.
8. Understand the rationale, application and side effects associated with adjuvant treatment including chemotherapy, targeted therapies, radiation and hormone therapy in order to screen and provide early intervention for treatment side effects.
8. Assess for cardiovascular fitness, initiate a safe and effective exercise program during adjuvant treatment to reduce side effects of medical treatment, improve cancer outcomes, and enhance physical and mental health.
9. Understand the pathophysiology of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, and provide appropriate interventions to improve balance and safety in daily living.
10. Understand the side effects of hormone therapy and provide appropriate screening and interventions for osteoporosis, joint pain, and dyspareunia (painful intercourse).
11. Demonstrate communication and value as an oncology team member and market cancer rehabilitation services to the community.
This course was designed for rehabilitation practitioners (physical & occupational therapists); it provides a framework for optimal care during and after breast cancer treatment to prevent and alleviate often unnecessary side effects that can become a detriment to survivors' quality of life.
I invite all oncology team members (physicians, nurse navigators, nutritionists, etc.) to take this comprehensive course. When we come together for the same purpose (improving breast cancer survivorship), our collaboration provides the opportunity to understand each field's unique perspective, improve communication, and advance standards of care for people with breast cancer.
Massage therapists specializing in cancer care will be pleased with the integration of this course into their practice. Exercise physiologists and athletic trainers who are qualified to work with cancer patients will also benefit from this course.
Although this course teaches the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of breast cancer patients, it is the responsibility of every practitioner to work within their scope of practice.
Start your KickPink journey whenever suits you best! Once enrolled, you have immediate access to the Welcome Section and can begin the course at your convenience. This self-paced program is structured with 16 hours of video content plus section tests. Although you have lifetime access to all materials, for an optimal learning experience and discipline, we recommend completing the course within a month (practitioners who are submitting for CEUs must complete the course within a year of registration).
Recommended Schedule:
* Immediately upon registration: Begin with the Welcome Section & Introduction activities.
* Week 1: Surgeries section
* Week 2: Lymphedema & Lymphatic Cording section
* Week 3: Adjuvant Treatment Part 1 — Overview of medical treatments, cardiotoxicity, and peripheral neuropathy.
* Week 4: Adjuvant Treatment Part 2 — Fatigue, cognitive changes, osteoporosis, joint pains, and painful intercourse.
Note: You must complete the online test at the end of each section before advancing to the next. Your course certificate will be emailed to you after completion of the course evaluation.
Course attendees can submit questions that will be answered during weekly office hours within the KickPink Practitioner Community. (Videos are available for replay.)
An optional personal contribution is recommended for KickPink certification; these projects live within the KickPink library. Examples of past projects have included case studies, research article summaries, exercise videos, interviews, and blog posts. These projects are self-determined areas of study, are meant to be enjoyable, and facilitate discussion amongst your instructor and fellow KickPink practitioners. KickPink practitioners often use this as a marketing opportunity for their own clinic visibility through KickPink.com (check out Kara Lyon's value-driven blog post on Mindfulness and Cancer-related Fatigue here).
You have 3 months to complete the course for certification.
Both! I get that everyone has a different lifestyle and method for optimal learning.
You can access the course content immediately upon registration and progress through the four main sections. While you have the flexibility to set your own pace, we recommend completing each section weekly to maintain a steady learning pace and achieve course completion within a month. But, if you don't nail the completion of content every week, don't be dismayed...stay the course, and ENJOY!
The best learning is achieved when you enjoy the content and feel supported. This is a 2-day course that you have 3 months to finish + you are supported the entire time! Heck, you can even get your questions answered in the KickPink community after your cohort ends! This isn't just a course...it's a mission built with community.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. This was my first course through KickPink and definitely not the last! Susannah is very knowledgeable, has a lot of passion for her work and keeps this course interesting and filled with evidence-based practice.
This course was brain challenging, inspirational, and very complete. I look forward to taking the manual skills I learned into my office as a LMBT helping support more women find more comfort in their tissues.

You can apply and use everything you've learned in the course on a new patient population. It is very obvious Susannah is passionate about treating breast cancer patients and I think that is a very big part of what made the course so enjoyable.
